You're so old timey

This last week I had not a moment to think about anything except toddler fever, toddler sleep, who will care for our sick toddler (my parents - turns out at 32 I still need them to do things for me) and also doing my job. Working mom gig sucks. Pft. Also, I had one of my horror movie dreams with chains and blades and blood and an unseen entity. Sigh. BTW, do you think "movie" is derived from "moving picture" in the same way "talkie" is derived from, um, "talking picture?" I'll check...yes. I never thought about that and now I'm going to giggle every time someone says movie.

Srsly though. I have just spent more than a week trying to write about the aurora borealis, rockets and rocket instrumentation. Ok, more accurately I've been writing about someone who knows about that stuff and basically discovered what the eff the northern lights are anyways. BTW - I think they're electrons or something. I wish everything I had to write had to do with post-soviet transition, war crimes and/or theories of nationalism. Or how to make Nanaimo bars and distract toddlers.

Plugging Away

I have high hopes for 2013. It shouldn't take much considering what a piece of shit 2012 was. Right now, KTF is with the kid and it's my day to stay in bed. I rarely go back to sleep once Max is up so I thought since I'm pretty bored with smurf village I'll do this instead.

I'm not sure what I'm hoping for exactly. I've stopped (am trying to stop because I'm addicted) reading the news and am hopeful this will improve my general mood. I'm hopeful we will keep our jobs (or maybe not and I could start my dog rescue ranch and KTF could have his food truck). I'm hopeful Max will continue to develop in all the ways he's supposed to. I'm also hopeful he will start sleeping past 4:30 again please please please we're so tired. I'm hopeful that the things that are important to the people I love work out how they want them to. I'm hoping for quiet times. I'm hoping to change the sheets this weekend. I'm hoping this dog sticks around for another five years, at least. And so on.

Saving some monies

Some of you may be aware that the U of S is facing some really significant budget cuts. People are losing their jobs and I don't take that lightly. I could very well be laid off at some point. That said, I just wanted to share some of my favourite suggestions from the campus community to address the budget shortfall of $44.5 million. Because this is my workplace, I'm keeping my comments inside my brain.
- engage in fundraising
- everyone work 4 days a week
- no more paper towels
- reduce maternity leave benefits
- and my very very favourite: buy a Tim Horton's franchise
